Sarlat.
Capital of the Perigord Noir in the north of the Dordogne, Sarlat is about 2 hours drive from our house in the Limousin but it's well worth making a day of it and visiting not only Sarlat but one or two other beautiful places close by, such as Domme, La Rogue-Gageac and Beynac.
Sarlat has to be one of the most picturesque towns in France and as such is a major tourist destination with lots of shops and restaurants. But don't be put off, as it's just such an incredibly beautiful place to visit. The architecture is just what you'd expect to see in a film about 'The Three Musketeers' and indeed Sarlat has been used as the film set for many period films.
Its best seen at night though, when the old medieval centre is lit-up. Best to see for yourself by 'googling' images for Sarlat.
