Beynac et Cazenac.
Situated on the river Dordogne and dominated by its castle perched on top of a high cliff, from which the medieval village tumbles down to the river's edge.
The castle - which can be visited, was beseiged by Richard the Lion Heart and changed hands between the French and the English many times during the 100 Years War. It was dismantled by Simon de Montfort and left to ruin during the French Revoluition before being restored in 1961.
Beynac lived off the river traffic, which used to be undertaken by the traditional 'gabares' (boats) but these have now given way to canoes and pleasure boats.
