Brantome.
Located in the Perigord Vert (green) area of the Dordogne, this is a very picturesque town on the river Dronne, which wraps itself around the centre of Brantome effectively creating an island. Indeed, Brantome has the nickname 'Venice of the Perigord' because of it's watery setting and the many bridges crossing the river.
There's a wonderful Abbey (founded by Charlemange) on the opposite side of the river and because of this Brantome was one of the places visited by pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostella in Spain. Close by the Abbey is a dog-legged bridge - the only one in Europe.
Brantome has many shops and restaurants.
